diane rollins feissel

Diane Rollins Feissel grew up in New England and studied painting at Bryn Mawr College in Pennsylvania. Following graduation in 1993 Diane continued painting studies in Philadelphia through classes at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and Fleisher Art Memorial. Since moving to the San Francisco Bay Area in 1998, Diane has participated in group shows at Hang Art Gallery, City Art Gallery, Build Community Art Space, LIMN Gallery, Base Art Gallery, Lift Gallery and 66balmy Gallery, as well as in four Open Studios. In both 2003 and in 2005 Diane's work was picked for ArtSpan's biennial juried exhibition Selections. Diane's work has also been selected for other juried shows in the Bay Area and beyond, including the Ninth Annual Georgetown International Fine Arts Competition hosted by the Fraser Gallery in Washington, D.C. in July 2005. In October 2005 Diane was one of a select group of artists representing San Francisco in Paris, France through an exhibition with the artists of "Le Génie de la Bastille." Diane currently shows work at Hang Art Gallery in San Francisco, California.

About Diane Rollins Feissel's Work

"Diane Rollins Feissel is drawn to the power of the human face to convey the full spectrum of human emotion and experience—humor, tragedy, boredom, pleasure, anxiety. Part voyeur, part exhibitionist, Feissel paints the familiar complexities of the human psyche. She is more interested in representing different states of being than in describing specific people or facial features (although she paints both masterfully).

Feissel’s faces are reflections of all of us, as we contemplate our own individuality and cultivate relationships with the people around us. Feissel looks to a number of painters for inspiration, including Mark Rothko, Gerhard Richter and Francis Bacon. Most often, she paints alla prima (directly in one sitting) in order to capture the essence of a moment."
